Any fanfic recommendations?

Despite not shipping it (I promise!) I've mostly read Destiel fics, usually AH. I really wanna get more into some canon case!fics that aren't shippy, not non-canon at least. I thought it might be fun to start with sharing some of our favorite stories with each other.

Even if it just ends up with my posts, at least I'll have a place to document my likes :p

I'll have a look through, but most of the ones I've read are ship ones.

So I apparently don't have many spn fics saved,

Painted Angels - rated M
Castiel Novak is an author, and his most successful book is about the failed relationship he had in college with a painter. It didn't last, but he finds himself back in the place where it all started for a book signing. When his former love shows up for the book signing, Cas finds all his old wounds open again. (Destiel)

The Interview - rated T
It begins at an award show. Dean Winchester, a well-known actor, stands before a crowd with Charlie at his side. The world looks at him and sees someone that has everything, the fame, the fortune, the life. They don't see the loss or what he refuses to tell. Then Charlie, his manager, sets up an interview with a journalist that seems to know how to get the truth. Destiel Denny AU.

Like Ghosts in the Desert - rated T
Sam is gone to hell, Cas is gone to heaven and Dean finds he has a hard time moving on, but at least he finds that he's not as alone as he thought he was Slash, Dean/Nick

I'm not familiar with any of these, I'll definitely have to check them out. I guess I'll share a handful of my faves, I'll try to mention a few non-Destiel ones, since I have read a couple of those, too ;)

Forget-Me-Not Blues - rated E (Destiel)
Sam and Jess are getting married and Dean couldn’t be any happier for them. Honestly, they’re kind of disgustingly perfect for each other and Dean’s pretty damn excited about staying with them the week before the wedding. He’s Sam’s best man, of course, and he doesn’t even mind that Jess has her own best man to share in all the organizational duties. The more the merrier, right?

Except Dean must have done something to epically piss off the universe because Jess’s best man just happens to be Castiel friggin’ Novak. He’s got even hotter since High School, but apparently no friendlier and if Cas wants to spend the week pretending like they’ve never met before? Fine. Two can play at that game.

Hope in Ruin - rated E (Destiel)
It took them by surprise when the infection hit.

Dean had always expected the world to fall apart through a clashing of biblical forces, not from a half-dozen scientists with a serious God complex.

In the devastated remains of civilization, Dean, Sam, Castiel, and two fellow survivors travel across the country searching for others. Living in a wasteland is hard enough, having to face a plethora of new threats doesn’t make it any easier.

But for Dean and Castiel, the most difficult journey will be finding something together that can withstand it all. In a world so damaged, finding hope amongst the ruin will be their greatest challenge.

For All You Young Hockey Players Out There, Pay Attention - rated E (Destiel) (This is my favorite SPN fanfic I've read so far!)
Dean Winchester knows two things about hockey, two things his dad made sure he knew. One, hockey is a guy’s sport, and two, hockey is family. Hockey meant Sam and Bobby and Benny and Victor and Gabriel and hell, his entire team. So when Victor gets traded, Russian-star-turned-new-teammate Castiel Krushnic becomes a threat. As much as Dean hates him for that, the longer he sticks around, the more he begins to threaten that first rule too. Dean’s been taught his whole life that those who play hockey should not be captivated by deep accented voices and the way a guy handles his stick, so how the hell is he supposed to justify what he’s starting to think about Cas? All Dean wanted at the beginning of the season was to win, and now all he wants to do is figure out how he feels about Cas and how to deal with it without ruining his career and tearing his family apart.

I Wish I Was Your Brother - rated K (Gen)
The intensity of the close bond between the Winchester brothers inspires envy, awe, admiration, longing and even suspicion in outsiders. A series of stories told by individuals after unforgettable encounters with Sam and Dean.

The Bird That Feels the Light - rated PG13 (Gen)
AU from 5.18 (or thereabouts). Castiel awakens in the middle of a smoking crater, stranded and very much human. According to the people who have discovered him, it’s six months to the day after Michael and Lucifer faced off on the field of battle outside of Detroit, and Castiel isn’t the only one to have returned. When, at his insistence, they take him to this other person, he finds a child –a little boy– and realizes that, contrary to all his expectations, he has been reunited with Dean Winchester.

The world has changed in their absence, and not for the better. Sam is gone, whether dead or simply missing is uncertain. Castiel is given the name of a man in Idaho who may have answers for him. He is faced with the task of traveling cross-country with Dean, who is dependent on him now in ways he never was before, in order to discover the truth. But along the way, as he and Dean learn to know and trust each other once more, Castiel begins to realize that the answers he thought he wanted might not be the ones he needs.

These are just some of my saved stories, I could absolutely come up with more later, if anyone wanted me to :)

I'll pretty much read any ship if the story is good, the top one does sound familiar so I think I have read it, but the rest I haven't read.

I've been really bad at reading Gen fic, just sticking to my ship in the past, with BtVS fanfic and Twilight fanfic, but since I don't ship anything in SPN, I thought that was a good chance to try out everything...and then I fell into the Destiel black hole lol. Now I'm trying to get back to my original goal. Although I'm currently re-reading some of my favorite Destiel stories, so maybe in a few months :p

Do you know any fics that have John in as well, and not abusive! John ones? Maybe preseason 1 hunting with Dean or something.

Not any I can think of right now, he's either the bad guy in an AH story or isn't around (or dead) in canon stories. If I find one, I'll let you know.

After S12 came out, I wanted so much to find a well-written story about John coming back instead of Mary, unfortunately very few exist and they aren't well-written...

John's Boys - Rated M
Dean was 5 when John left his sons alone in a motel room. Now 12 years later, John is still searching for his oldest and the thing that took him. He never told Sam he had a brother; what if they never found Dean? John couldn't build up the kid's hopes only to shatter them. But as fate would have it, a beat up stranger in the woods has a very familiar set of dinosaur green eyes...

I read this one last night, it's a long one and it gripped me. It's a Gen fic with teenage Winchesters AU. It's already become one of my favourites.

Gen means General and can have no ships or canon ships, but the focus is not on the ships. An example would be a story where Dean and Lisa are a couple, but the plot has nothing to do with their romance.

I read Forget Me Not Blues, it did start off similar to another I had read but went in a different direction, I enjoyed that, the misunderstandings, the flashbacks to high school.

Also read the Hockey one, that was a slow burn fic, but very easy to get into. My only real fault with that one was there was a lot of description of the hockey games, which as someone with very little interest in that I kinda fast forwarded then!

See, for me, the hockey stuff was some of the best, because I'm not a fan; the story was so well-written (clearly by a hockey aficionado) that it made me want to start going to hockey games :)

Round Came the Magpie - M (Destiel)
Dean Winchester met an angel on his thirteenth birthday and never could have predicted the road his life would take... Now, it's thirteen years later and John Winchester, his father, goes missing. Dean finds his past and his future coming together in one horrible mess. Luckily though, Dean has some help to get him out of it – even if it isn’t exactly a smooth ride.

The trouble with Archive of our own is I get distracted by the tags.

Do you know if there's any sites that are just spn fics?

Distracted by the tags? I've never heard of that, in what way do you mean? And I prefer AO3, but sometimes you'll find the same story that's on AO3 is also on fanfiction.net. Beyond that, I haven't found anything solely SPN related. The closest is a website that holds tons of fic reccs and reviews, but those are links, usually to AO3.

Random fic, and not one I've read, or the best tags but an example of the random stuff people put.

Oh, I can easily ignore that so I guess I didn't realize what you meant. I've gotten so used to AO3 by now that I automatically skip it, and when I read a story I use the option 'full story' instead of 'chapter by chapter' so that I don't have to look at the tags more than once. Especially since they often spoil coming events in the story.

Yeah I usually do full story, but I like to avoid the pwp tag
