Why does everybody like Dean better?

In terms of friendships, the majority of characters have stronger bonds with Dean rather than Sam.

He was Bobby's favorite. Crowley prefers his Squirrel to Moose. Charlie seemed to connect with Dean better. Krissy, Claire and lets not forget Cas all have a more profound bond with Dean.

I have been trying to think of somebody who seems to prefer Sam and I came up blank...The Campbells? I don't know.

Why do you guys think that is? Why doesn't Sam connect with people the way Dean does?

@Death - I did think of Ruby. That is true. But was Ruby really his "friend"? I do wonder if she actually felt anything really genuine for Sam or was it all just following orders?

I think because Sam seemed more moody and brooding whereas Dean was more upbeat and cheerful, generally speaking. Sam seemed more aloof.

I agree, that could really be a big part of it. Dean makes people laugh, Sam is often Mr. Broody Pants. I know that is definitely a factor in why I prefer Dean over Sam.

I think in some ways it's as Dean has been the "parent" and knows the worry of revealing the world to someone that you've tried to keep it hidden from. Dean also seem more open, at least in the earlier seasons, to thinking outside the box, to being willing to make the harsh decisions, but also accepting those decisions.

Plus he chooses junk food over a salad!

I think Dean is easier to relate to for the people they are encountering. He is the older brother/father figure. He has accepted and mostly embraced the life of the hunter, and he works hard to do it right. The bad guys like him because his weak spot is obvious (Sam) and they can play that against him; the good guys like him because he is loyal, a fighter, and very much so anti-evil and will do anything to stop it. Sam was drawn into the hunting life kicking and screaming, and has been looking for a way out of the life pretty much the entire time. He definitely tends to be broody and bitter, and very analytical. It seems he is still seen as the "little brother" kind of along for the ride with Dean for a lot of the other characters.

I think it's for the same reason he's a great character - his complexity. Even characters who are against him can't help but like him on some level. Sam is kind of a downer. *waits for Ruby to come and correct her* Sam is kind of like the "regular" person, the "you or me" character, the voice of reality (usually). So characters (and fans) don't necessarily want to be like him, because they're already like him.

Well, I kinda was... indirectly. Sam is a normal person whereas his broham is James Dean Winchester.

I hate the fact that Bela knows me so well that she knew I was gonna come in here and rant at her. SAM IS NOT A DOWNER!!

Alright, now that that's out of the way, let's be real.

Dean's fun. I can admit that, Dean's the one who looks for the fun side of everything, unless the situation is particularly dire. Sam is more practical, I'd maybe even go as far as to say he's more pessimistic. He tends to think about the worst case scenario in any given problem, so that he's prepared for the worst possible outcome. Whereas Dean tries to look past the problem to what will happen next, like he knows for sure that everyone's going to come out the other side. People gravitate towards that kind of attitude, even I can admit that.

I'll be honest, it bothers me a lot that Sam is often left in the cold. The close friends he had in college all turned out to be demons, his girlfriend was killed, the one person he opened up to after Jessica stabbed him in the back and was using him, the only person he has in his life is Dean - whereas Dean has a lot more closer relationships.

I liked the last few seasons where they were building Sam and Cas' relationship a little more, rebuilding the bridges that were broken when Cas purposefully broke Sam's wall.

I don't agree with those 'fans' who insist that Sam offers nothing to the show and should be gotten rid of (obviously), but I can, sort of, see their point when they say that Sam has no ties to the show other than Dean. And that's the writers' fault. That's the writers' fault for focusing their attention on Dean and his relationships.

I mean, come on, right now, the only person we can say for sure that Sam has any kind of bond and connection with is Lucifer. And that's just crap.

But isn't that what makes Sam the 'hero' of the show and Dean the 'sidekick'?

In my opinion, yes, but in the opinion of the Dean Stans, all they see is someone who is unable or unwilling to form close ties with people - other than the worst person/being in the history of the world.

Now to me, that's total character assassination. Sam is not my fav character (sorry) but I don't think he's more alone than Dean by choice, or because he's defective lol

I agree. I don't see Sam as "defective" or "unwilling" to reach out to people. Just more serious and....in his own head, maybe? It can put people off.

Seriously? People want to get rid of him? :(

I think you're right about the writers. There is nothing "wrong" with Sam per se, he could easily form stronger ties with people, it just hasn't been written that way.
