When John was possessed by the yellow eyed demon, both Dean and Sam had a chance to shoot him. Should they have done that, knowing that John would have wanted it, knowing that the demon would finally be killed and they could move on.

I just feel like that's not the "Winchester Way" - they don't sacrifice themselves unless they absolutely have to, and then they don't accept it as final. Probably, they should have, but I don't think they thought "this is the only way to kill this demon" - they believed they would have another chance, so the demon would be dead and John would be alive, a win win.
