When do you think did Sam decide to not go back to college and to continue hunting with Dean? Early on he's so adamant that he's only in to find the yellow-eyed demon who killed his mother and Jess, but later he seems to abandon that and embrace the life as a hunter. What happened? Was it a certain job that made him reconsider?

Tell me your thoughts.

I think it's partly due to having nothing to go back to, Jess died, his friend turned out to be a demon.

This is a good point. He could have gone back to college though, right? Maybe not though. He did miss that big interview for law school, and I'm assuming they rented his apartment out to someone else, and he may have even lost his place in the program. He did just skip town, after all, with no notice and without finishing the semester. I'm sure everyone understood that he was taking a leave of absence after Jess' death, though. But I imagine they all assumed he'd return.

Perhaps after all that Sam had seen, he felt alienated from his old life at college and that he would no longer fit in?

Duno about Sam but that was pretty true for me. It all seemed so petty and small after witnessing violence and death. The world is much bigger out of the safety of schooling, and once there is a taste of more, it's hard to go backwards.

Sam might have re-assessed his priorities and decided his life path was more than the college norm. Helping people is addictive. I can't imagine he would have been happy in a law role, although I can see him in the lifestyle guru kale role from the latest episode, if he had turned his back on his family and calling.

Just on season 8 now and Sam had looked into going back to school, he gets an email about admissions after Dean returns from purgatory.
