I have no idea where to put this, so apologies if this is the wrong place!
We've recently had a similar thread on Angel seasons over on Buffy Boards, so I thought it might be interesting to see how you guys would rank these seasons. Feel free to pick how many; for example, I will be ranking 13 seasons, as I've only seen S14 once and don't feel capable of ranking it just yet.
Anyway, here's my list, which has been pretty set in stone for the past year
13 - Season Six (6)
Weekend at Bobby's, Clap Your Hands if You Believe, The French Mistake, The Man Who Would Be King and the finale is just not enough to save this season from being the worst of the bunch. The Soulless!Sam arc lasted far too long, there didn't appear to be a main villain until episode 19, the viewers should've been clued in on Castiel several episodes before the boys found out, and it has some of the weakest MOTW episodes of the show, imo.
12 - Season Twelve (12)
Some truly spectacular episodes in this one (including my favorite of the show) and some stellar characters (like Pellegrino's return as Lucifer) but the main storyline - the British Men of Letters - just seemed to not live up to its potential introduced to us in the S11 finale and the first 2 episodes of this season. They ended up not being nearly as threatening as they were probably meant to be and the best thing we got from this whole plotline was Arthur Ketch (whom I adore
). Crowley also should've been killed off at least 1 season earlier, though at least he got a really great death scene, so there's that.
No season of Supernatural is truly bad, not to me, but this one just doesn't do much for me. And, much like S6, it suffers from coming right after a stellar season that changed the game, a lot.
11 - Season Seven (7)
I love saying Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie out loud, can't lie.
Unicorns who fart rainbows, Hallucifer haunting Sammy, Kevin Tran & Charlie Bradbury, plenty stuff to love from this one which is considered much worse than it deserves in the fandom. Then again, it's also got Ghost!Bobby, which I could've done without. Thanks for cheapening his death and how much it made me cry, writers!
10 - Season One (1)
I mentioned in the recent Angel ranking that I'm not good with first seasons, and here's the evidence. It's not a bad season, again, but it's also nothing like what the rest of the show would turn out to be. I do enjoy the concept of urban legends and two boys against the monsters, but I'm very thankful that Kripke changed the recipe up for S2.
The Bad: Pilot, Bugs, Racist Ghost Truck, where was John all this time they were looking for him?
The Good: Home, Skin, Faith, Sam's grief for Jessica, Dean's intensity about protecting his family, and the conversation between John and Sam in Dead Man's Blood.
9 - Season Nine (9)
I've never understood fans that got 'sick of the angel storyline' but I guess to each their own. I also adore Metatron as a villain, he's so deliciously sleazy and when he grins I just get so excited for whatever's gonna come next. On top of that, the Mark of Cain storyline is my favorite in the whole show, and this is the beginning of it. But, this is so far down for a reason...
I felt nothing when Kevin died - sorry - and I wished we had gotten to see more of Cas-as-a-human struggle. The return of the Ghostfacers was better on paper, Bloodlines!!!, and not enough build-up for the eventual death of the Knight of Hell, Abaddon.
But when I occasionally do SPN quick re-watches, I tend to lean towards the hat-trick that is Holy Terror/Road Trip/First Born for a reason
8 - Season Ten (10)
What did I previously say about the Mark of Cain storyline? We also get a great musical episode, some delicious Deanmon (though not nearly enough to satisfy), more wonderful brotherly character stuff, and Crowley sulking over his BFF (Dean) not wanting to hang out with him anymore. Btw, this was the season where Crowley should've died, he became mostly superfluous after S10. The bad does not, at all, outweigh the good and we are now getting to the truly good stuff on this list.
7 - Season Four (4)
I've never hated Sam Winchester more. It probably wasn't that bad the first time I watched it, but on every re-watch, all I can see are all the moments, all the chances when Sam could've chosen Dean over Ruby, and he always chose the demon!!!
But besides that, it's a great season! We get our first meeting with Castiel (plus the slow-build of his friendship with Dean), we get a super awesome baddie in Zachariah, we get Chuck and Adam and In the Beginning and Monster Movie and Yellow Fever and much more. But it's still only 7, right? Because we've also got Metamorphosis, Family Remains, Criss Angel is a Douche Bag, the lesser Ruby (sorry Gen!) and no Ellen and Jo
6 - Season Five (5)
I get the hype. I really, really get the hype. But it just doesn't do for me what 5 other seasons do, but it is a great season, with very few weak episodes, so let's just get those out of the way; Fallen Idols, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid aaand, that's it
Watching Dean and Sam grow back towards each other, Dean forgiving Sam, Sam trying to forgive himself, is so heartbreakingly beautiful and the very best part of the season. Also, more Cass! And, of course, episodes like; The End, Changing Channels, Abandon All Hope..., Dark Side of the Moon, Swan Song and so many more!
5 - Season Thirteen (13)
Did this one take you by surprise as much as me? I totally wasn't expecting another amazing season so close to S11, and after the weakness that was S12. But this one was so great, from Jack to the return of all of those lost characters to the introduction of Apocalypse!World to Dean's grief and to being the season that made me love Sam Winchester so much! Seriously, before S13 he wasn't even in my top 10 favorite characters, now he's 3!
I have very few complaints about this season, in fact I can't think of a single weak episode and that's shocking even me! This is just so great and the reason I often wonder why people call 4 and 5 the best of the show
4 - Season Three (3)
I suppose they're cheating a bit with just 16 episodes but at the same time they had to quickly revise the season when the strike happened, so they did a pretty good job if you ask me. They do still manage to have a few weak episodes in there, but it's more than made up by a great overall storyline (saving Dean from going to hell), wonderful secondary characters - Bobby, Ruby 1.0, Bela, Gordon - and some truly memorable episodes, like Mystery Spot, A Very Supernatural Christmas, Jus in Bello, Ghostfacers, No Rest for the Wicked and so on.
3 - Season Eight (8)
Despite the fact that the first half of this is very up-and-down, it's completely ignored in favor of how great the second half is, and the fact that this season holds the best finale of the show (so far) - apologies to the fans of Swan Song - doesn't hurt, either. The flashbacks to Purgatory are great, along with Benny (<3), the trials storyline, Sam's determination to get the job done, and the return of characters like Kevin and Charlie, who could easily have wound up just being one-offs from S7. Castiel also gets great character work as he tries to make up for what he did to his brethren in past seasons. I can't put my finger on why, but I just adore this season!
2 - Season Two (2)
A superb and well-put-together season that really showed what the series may be capable of if given a chance. It expanded the world quite a bit - by introducing the Roadhouse and several new hunters, good (Ellen, Jo, Ash) and bad (Gordon Walker) alike, by giving us a few new super soldier kids (Andy, Ava), and by having Bobby show up in a lot of episodes throughout the season. It expands the lore, as well, especially the demon one with an episode like Crossroad Blues. A lot of what we have in later seasons couldn't have happened without this season. It's just really great and I always love re-watching it in its entirety.
1 - Season Eleven (11)
Hands down the greatest season of the show and the greatest season of television, period. I cannot stress it enough or say it in the way it sounds in my brain, but I just LOVE this season so friggin' much!
Casifer and Billie and Baby and Chuck (singing) and Metatron's redemption and the Wayward ladies (minus Donna) and The Vessel and Sam and Dean finally on the same side and working together and not lying to each other and Crowley, even if think he had overstayed his welcome by then, and Amara and Speight's directorial debut and Rowena McLeod and Bobby and Rufus and great MOTW episodes and a story that goes together without any plot holes and just I LOVE IT
