EW article: How they want it to end

Supernatural isn’t ending anytime soon — especially now that it’s been renewed for a record-breaking 12th season — but that doesn’t mean stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles haven’t thought about how’d they would like the Winchester brothers to say goodbye.

However, just because they’ve thought about it doesn’t mean they have an exact answer. Actually, if they ever had an answer, the lesson is that it will change the longer your show continues.

“If you’d asked me season 1, I would’ve thought that it would’ve been the apocalypse. But then again, you can’t end the TV show with the worst thing happening,” Ackles says. “As we’ve evolved, I think that there’s different roads that the show could certainly go down that would be interesting. I think we’ve taken some really good turns.”

Padalecki adds, “It’s changed a lot over time. Part of me, loving Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, always thought it’d be great to see the boys against insurmountable odds and to freeze-frame on them and just hear stuff in the background. You don’t know if they die, you don’t know if they live, but you know that they’re going to go out in a blaze of glory.”

But Padalecki realizes that’s not the only viable option. “And then I went back and watched a few of the episodes, I watched through ‘Swan Song’ and the scene of the boys laying on the hood of the Impala. I think that’d be a nice way to go out if we had to — watching the end of the world. Or looking up at us from the trunk and throwing the weapons in and saying we’ve got work to do. All of those kind of leave room for opinion and room for interpretation. I don’t think we should see the boys die or live, we should wonder.”

Regardless of the exact circumstances, Padalecki says there’s one very important rule: “The boys can’t stop fighting. As long as they’re alive, they’re not going to stop fighting. We’re going to have to see them continue to do good together. I think that’s what’s the most important part.”

The key words there? “As long as they’re alive.” And according to Ackles’ thoughts on an ending, both brothers might not make it out of this show alive. ”It’s either going to end tragic or it’s going to end not tragic, and I can kind of make an argument for both,” he says. “I don’t really know where it’s going to go. I always thought Dean would make the ultimate sacrifice for his brother. I guess if I had to choose something, that’s probably what I would choose.”

At the end of the day, neither actor knows where the story is going, and quite frankly, neither one seems to want to know. At this point, they’re just along for the ride, and considering there’s still gas in the Impala’s tank, we’ve still got a ways to go.

I personally would like a sort of 'Not Fade Away' ending, the fade to black leaving us guessing.

Either that, or something like the end of S2, like Jared said, throwing the weapons in the trunk and driving off to the next problem after defeating the latest big bad. Like, yeah, it's all just in a days work and the work never ends but the show does.

One thing I do want is that I want them to know that it's over before they've filmed the final ep. I don't want something like AtS, where they don't have time to prepare a proper ending. I want a huge warning, so that they can wrap everything up with a nice neat bow.

I think it would have honestly killed me if they end of S6 or S7 or something with a cliff like that, had been the end of the show. That would have just been something so horrible that I don't think I would have been able to handle it.

That's what I thought about it.. it was kinda like a Not Fade Away. See them reach into the trunk, grab some weapons 'lets do this' close the truck and cut to black. Plus then it leaves the option for a movie open!

I agree - I think the show needs to be left open to interpretation, but that the "keep on fighting" theme is still present. That's kind of the theme of the whole show, so that's how they should go out.

I love the idea of "I don't think we should see the boys die or live, we should wonder." It feels like it fits the show because well, they've been through a lot, dimensions, demons and the whole hootenanny of an apocalypse and come back fighting through it all. It'd be better to just not know.

(of course, at bye-bye's maybe SPN will also go on in a comic that'll ruin everything. Who knows ;) )

They better not do a comic afterwards! A book after though would be good, kinda an epilogue of the survivors of a big battle, those characters we know and what happened to them. Perhaps even just covering those that weren't there at the end so not Sam and Dean, so we're always left wondering about them.

Apparently there already are supernatural comics as a prequel to the show.

Personally, I'd always envisioned it ending with Sam's death (for real) and Dean quitting to live a normal life. Sam would be redeemed, and Dean could finally stop fighting. He's certainly earned that right.

I loved how it ended in S5. There are times I think maybe it should have ended with that.

I think the original ending of S5 would have been okay - Sam dead, Dean living his life. But there is no way on this earth that I could have accepted Dean being completely unaware that Sam was alive (in whatever sense) and Sam just...leaving him there. That would have been the most horrific ending possible for me.

Now, I don't see Dean just...living his life like a normal when Sam is dead. That just does not sound like the Dean Winchester I know and love. The only reason he did it before was because Sam ordered him to. But we can see that he was not happy. He might have tried to hold on to both lives, but as sppn as he knew Sam was alive, he knew that he would end up having to choose and he knew that Lisa wouldn't win. I can possibly see the show ending with Sam's death, but this week's ep proved to me that Dean wouldn't be able to just go on with his life. I think Sam is the same, I don't think either of them has the capability of living without the other, I think that's the whole point of the show. They fall apart when the other isn't there.

The only way I can see this show ending is either both of them dying, or an open ended 'they never stop fighting' kind of thing.

Lol, while I loved the ending of season 5, I kind of hated the "Sam's dead and Dean's now living straight" thing, guess I just can't picture him doing that, it felt through and through out of character to me.

I was rewatching some of S2 recently and thinking man, if only Jo and Ellen were still around it would be really seamless just to move from the Winchesters to them.
