Eric Kripke took his 5-season storyline and left the series, leaving season 6 and the show in the hands of Sera Gamble. This started a new cycle in terms of the story and mythology in general, also the overall tone of the series shifted greatly.

How was Supernatural able to remain viable after the initial premise ran dry while other shows peter out?
If they were able to redefine the show, why do you think other shows have trouble with that?

I think the fact that there are two main characters, who are well written and well defined, that are LOVED by their fans, has something to do with it. There's been continuity of those badass characters - and they aren't trying to hold together a huge cast; Sam & Dean are the anchor. Also I think they've at least come up with new ideas, for better or worse, whereas other shows sometimes get retread or boring.

I was thinking about this while watching Scarecrow last night. I think maybe what has helped the show is that in the beginning, when we were just meeting the characters and getting into the mythology, we have a very distinct Monster of the Week format. The eps are very standalone. I think this helped them to draw in viewership. Then before it got too boring, they expanded the show and made larger arcs more integral to the day to day episodes to keep the fans interested. They gave them something new without losing the characters they loved.

And then it slowly took on a more comedic tone to attract and keep the female base?

I think the humor always has been and always will be there. It just swings from being light-hearted and goofy to more dark, depending on the situation.
